ChapmanBDSP engineer Leah Lucien has been named as one of the top 50 Women in Engineering for 2018 by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES).
The WES annual list, known as the WE50, showcases female talent - from rising starts to senior figures - within the industry. The winners were announced in a special supplement printed in the Sunday Telegraph and timed to coincide with International Women in Engineering Day - a campaign seeking to raise the profile of females in the industry.
The theme for this year’s WE50 was ‘returners and transferrers’ and Ms Lucien, a graduate mechanical engineer, impressed judges by telling them how she successfully transitioned from the oil and gas sector to the construction industry.
Ms Lucien said: ‘I was really surprised to be nominated for the award and I never thought I’d make the top 50. To begin with transferring between two industries was a challenge, however, the last two years have been really rewarding and have given me the opportunity to learn new skills and make lasting contributions on some high-profile projects.’
Lucy Vereenooghe, director at ChapmanBDSP who nominated Ms Lucien for the award, added: ‘I interviewed Leah when she first came to us, looking for a move into building services, having been in oil and gas. She joined our team two years ago, and in that time has shown a real aptitude for our work. She has worked hard to learn new skills required for the role she is in and is now an established and respected member of our team. I am sure that she will go on developing skills and growing into a more senior role at ChapmanBDSP and I look forward to supporting her on that journey.’
The WE50 winners have been invited to afternoon tea event at The Royal Academy of Engineering to meet prominent people in the sector. WES, a charity and professional network of women engineers, scientists and technologists, releases the WE50 each year to help inspire women and promote equality.
